Wilson’s Second Blog.

The second question being considered during this unit is: What does the way women are depicted in contemporary fiction say about our culture and identity? Evaluate the purpose of presenting women in this way in your novel.

When looking at many different novels about women, it is shown that there are many different views on women and their role in our culture. However in the novel Stained, only one view is represented. The view in stained is that although women can be seen as weak they are also stong in many different ways. They are shown to have determination yet lack will power. In Stained Joss is shown as both strong and weak. She never gives up her search until she has found peace. However she denies Gabe of his wishes and tells his parents that she has seen him even when he asked her and she promised to not tell.
This represents how women are depicted in society very well. They are not always seen as the strongest when it somes to certain things however when it comes to other things they can be very strong.

    blog from Lauren to Wilson:
It is very interesting to read blogs on another novel dealing with the depiction of women in different societies. At first it seemed as though Joss was merely viewed as weak and powerless character, but as the novel continues on the reader learns that she possesses strong qualities that show her true personality. Unlike in the Joy Luck Club, this only deals with one girl instead of the relationships between mothers and daughters. In the JLC, the personalities and beliefs of the daughters/mothers are the things that make them stand out in the society. These women are all strong – as Joss is in Stained – but also lack the “will power” to really change the future that they are destined for. The different views of the readers are quite interesting on the depiction of women and how they are different depending on the culture and society. Good analysis Wilson!

    Wilson,

You make two strong statements at the end of your post. I am wondering what you mean by women being depicted in society. What things are women very strong at? What things are women weak at? I look forward to your response.

Yup I hear that nader blade. As I just posted on my own site I think that in Zorro the two views of women are represented as well. With most of the bad qualities being depicted in the upper classes and the more desirable qualities in the lower ones. Women like Regina are extremely strong, capable enough to lead an army of rebels.
